About Darrell
If sound or light goes through it, Darrell is interested. He’s had a lifelong interest in the technology behind film, video and audio and has found the evolution of art and technology in the last generation fascinating, now also seen through the eyes of his own teenage children.
Although he did his post-secondary studies in film production at York University – cinematography in particular – Darrell started his work career in the early 90s as a theatrical sound designer/technician and worked on many regional and international productions. Before long, his audio experience melded with his film and video background and he was developing and building systems for productions where there was a high degree of integration between audio, video and automation systems. He saw early on that there were very few tech companies that focused on the complications of designing and installing systems that incorporated such a wide breadth of technology. Hence the shingle was hung in 1998.
With a boots-on-the-ground management style, Darrell has been able to bring the creative, cooperative, can-do attitude from his theatre and film experience to a team proficient in the complexities of construction, logistics and networks in the real world. He fosters a collaborative approach between his team and their clients, while always keeping the final performance in mind.
He says that the real management begins away from work! He and his wife enjoy a busy home life with three children, several horses, a dog and a very large cat. They are in constant motion between the horses, hockey, camping, canoeing and as many big mountain ski adventures. Few free minutes, perhaps – but lots of great photo opportunities!
